If you’re in front of the telly at 8 o’clock tomorrow night I really recommend that you watch this. Because if you think that dubious secret policing tactics are the preserve of Middle Eastern dictatorships, this will make you think again.
I worked on this investigation briefly while I was back in the UK in April, but the people who deserve the credit for sticking with the story and piecing all the links together are Guardian journalists Paul Lewis and Rob Evans. They’ve been writing the Undercover Blog on the paper’s website for over two years, and this documentary is based largely on the work that they have done and the contacts they’ve made.
They also have a book coming out – and I’ve read the draft so I can guarantee that it’s very good indeed:
Dispatches: The Police’s Dirty Secret is on Channel 4, Monday 24th June at 8pm.
